If you or someone you love is struggling and you’re not sure where to turn, you’re not alone in asking this question. Crisis-lite behavioral health care is a same-day option for adults who need support right now, without the wait of a traditional appointment and without the intensity of a hospital stay.
What “Crisis-Lite” Means
Crisis-lite care is same-day, walk-in behavioral health stabilization for adults experiencing a mental health crisis who do not require hospitalization. There’s no appointment, no referral, and no waitlist. You can think of it as mental health urgent care, but where urgent care treats and releases, crisis-lite care stabilizes you the same day and stays with you until you’re connected to your next step.
How Crisis-Lite Care Is Different From the ER or Inpatient Care
Not every mental health crisis requires an emergency room visit or an inpatient psychiatric stay. Those settings are built for situations involving immediate danger to yourself or others, or a medical condition that needs round-the-clock monitoring.
Crisis-lite care fills the gap for adults who need help today, but whose situation doesn’t rise to that level. It sits between the emergency department and the outpatient waitlist, a space that has historically left a lot of people without anywhere to go.
Who Crisis-Lite Care Is For
Crisis-lite stabilization may be a fit if you are:
- An adult (18 or older). EMHS serves adults only, a clinical fit decision that lets our team build a program specifically for adult needs.
- Experiencing a mental health crisis, but not in immediate danger to yourself or others.
- Looking for support today, not weeks from now.
- In need of short-term stabilization, not ongoing, long-term treatment. EMHS connects you to that next step rather than providing it directly.
If you are in immediate danger to yourself or others, please call or text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) or go to your nearest emergency room.
What Happens When You Walk In: Stabilize, Coordinate, Connect
Stabilize
You’ll be seen the same day for a behavioral health assessment. Depending on your needs, this can include crisis intervention, short-term counseling or a stabilization group, and medication management, including bridge medications to hold you over until your next appointment.
Coordinate
Case management and peer support begin immediately, not after you’ve left. This is the step that sets crisis-lite care apart from a true treat-and-release urgent care visit.
Connect
Before you leave, EMHS works to connect you with your next step. That might be outpatient treatment, residential care, sober living, employment or housing support, or other basic needs resources. EMHS stays with you until that connection is made.
Frequently Asked Questions
